Standard

So. This week.

Yikes.

This virus is finally on its way out, but I have a lovely, disgusting cough it’s given me as it goes. It really knocked me out this past week, and I haven’t been able to do much.

So what does that mean?

Very behind on NaNoWriMo. No exercise. Lots of tissues and grumbling. I’m not sure if I’m going to try to continue NaNo at this point; I may just write and see how far it gets me.

It’s amazing how much how we feel can affect things you don’t even think about as physical, let alone the ones you do.

So that was my week. How was yours?

I have been missing in despatches as things are not going well on the writing front. All my time & energy is being taken up in dealing with my mother’s upcoming visit to the US. There is no reason why it should be, but that’s my mother for you. She’s being very difficult in other ways too and I’m at the very end of my tether. My chiropractor has just told me she’s not seen me in such a bad state for quite some time. I may need to consider going no contact with my mother for my future mental health. It is an extreme option, but feels a necessary one currently. It’s not helped that I’m not getting my regular endorphin rush from my personal blog posts. I was prepared to forgo those in order to make progress on the “proper” writing, but … the absence of both is causing much grief. That and my camera died on Saturday, leaving me standing around a cold airfield all day watching Himself take pictures. Yes, I am a very gloomy bunny. Things will be better after Wednesday evening.

I am so sorry to hear that you’ve had such a rotten virus. I feel for you – the timing couldn’t have been worse. Well, I guess it could’ve ruined your amazing cruise holiday, but … y’know what I mean. I hope the cough doesn’t linger.

I think you are making a wise decision to simply get as much writing as you can done, rather than try to catch up & keep up with NaNo. Good luck with it.

    • Debs, I’m so so sorry to hear everything going on, that’s a lot to deal with. And A DEAD CAMERA?! THE HORROR!! That had to be so upsetting. And it’s the worst when you have no camera and someone else is taking photos.

My phone has a nice camera, sometimes I have fun with that bc it’s a whole different way of taking photos, if you can do that in the future. I never thought of doing it until I started.

Thanks on the cold, yes it DEFINITELY could have struck on vacation and that would have been so disappointing. And I haven’t had one that bad in a while, so I’m glad of that.

Overall, I think you are going to need to sit down and figure out some things you can do for self-care, and list some priorities. You are only one person.

And if that means going no- or low- contact with your mom, then you have to do that. When does she leave?

It’s so easy to take on the entirety of other people’s weight, but it’s no working for you. You need to take care of yourself, and you need to figure out what that means. You’re an amazing person, and you deserve balance and happiness.

Hang in there, Debs, and I’m always here (or on twitter. Who are we kidding, mostly twitter)

I know all this stuff, but still get stuck in the toxic loop with her. I get out, but get sucked back in. It’s catholic guilt & Indian duty (I may use that as a story title one day). Thanks so much for providing a listening post, for offering sound advice & lovely words. It helps. She leaves Wednesday evening – and is away for 2.5 months. I will get my game head back on while she’s gone. Thanks again.

    • Oh Debs, what a good reprieve! You’re so close to getting a break. Where is she going in the US? I bet rates are cheap right now.

Good, you get a good chance to figure it all out while she’s gone. I’m glad it’s so soon.

Thanks Isa-Lee, I realised too late that I’d done it (bad signal zone) and hoped you’d save my blushes 🙂 She’s off to St Louis to stay with my sister. It’ll be her first winter visit which will be interesting for a child of the tropics. We booked ages ago in an attempt to get cheap flights, but she’s now decided to upgrade to business :O

      • Well, I hope she and your sister enjoy the nice long visit! She could get some real weather in St. Louis…at least it’s an adventure. Hopefully the upgrade is worth it overall.

        Your respite is looming 😉

  3. After I read about your virus, I think I had a sympathy cold for a day or two, but just a sore throat. I hope you stay in Nano, even if you don’t finish. Personally, I find the tracking helpful, and honestly today’s “peptalk” was just what I needed.

As for my WIP, I was rockin’ and rollin’ and suddenly realized one of my plot devices was… poorly planned out? Didn’t seem to fit with who the protagonist is turning into as I write her. So yesterday was a low word count, as I spent a lot of time with notebooks and scrap paper trying to rehash some things. Still, I think this will be a better-written book than my last endeavor!

    • That all sounds awesome! Except for the virus. I’m starting to think they can be transferred over the internet! I’m glad it wasn’t a big one, though.

It’s good you took the time to think about it. It’s so funny how thinks change while you’re writing. Sounds like you’re having an awesome NaNo!
