#FridayThoughts: When a mansplainer says “Be a kind person.”

Standard

Came across a ridiculous mansplainer on twitter today, one who fully admitted he hadn’t seen the material yet still questioned comedian Hannah Gadsby’s take on the hate of the special and the hate she receives.

He told me to “be a kind person.”

I mean.

When I pointed out that he’d piled on the vitriol aimed at her by gaslighting her and assuming she was wrong, he asked me to point out where he’d piled on the vitriol.

Basically the second half of the sentence. The second half OF THE VERY SAME SENTENCE.

It’s endless, isn’t it, this flood of men who assume they know everything even when they freely admit they don’t know what they’re talking about, yet assume it still has to be more accurate, more truthful, more real than whatever a woman says.

Maybe I’m extra edgy, maybe I’m extra fatigued, but “Be a kind person?”

What does that mean to a mansplainer? Don’t point it out? Smile and nod?

Don your red cloak and bonnet there’s a good girl?

“Be a kind person.”

Screw that. I’ll be THE kind OF person who musses up blissful entitlement. Hope you’ll do the same, people of all genders. Have a great Friday and a fabulous weekend.

Exactly ten words.

#WednesdayWisdom: You don’t always have to listen to your brain.

Standard

Granted, this sounds like it could be the advice of Aunty Ida, but I swear there’s no sci-fi aspect to this one. Well maybe a little.

Basically very little sci-fi.

This whole morning, no matter what it was time to do–get up, work out, brush my teeth, make breakfast–my brain screamed “I don’t wanna.”

Not one part of it.

“I don’t wanna.”

But I got up, I worked out, I brushed my teeth, I made breakfast. Thing by thing, I plodded through, regardless of what the voice in my head said.

And I still don’t wanna. I don’t want to get ready to go, I don’t want to drive for an hour, I don’t want to participate in the ritual which has become the routine.

I don’t wanna.

But I’m gonna.

I hope all the things you’re gonna do are done easily. Have a great Wednesday.

#TuesdayThoughts: Gotta do…

Standard

First things first, here is the link for the latest update about my mom. It’s become a Tuesday ritual, really.

Today, like yesterday, is gray, though today, unlike yesterday, it’s not supposed to rain.

I don’t know that I believe the experts on this one. And a fellow Chicagoan mentioned the rain with her commute this morning so…

Hmm.

So today I guess it will be tough going getting there and getting home. Woo. Hoo.

But some wise philosopher once said you gotta do what you gotta do, and that’s what I gotta do.

Shrug.

Anyway, I have to get ready to do it, so I’m off. Have a great Tuesday.

#MondayThoughts: Engine unrevved.

Standard

A Happy Indigenous Peoples Day to all! Yesterday was the marathon, and though I usually go watch, this year I didn’t. I didn’t want to risk being around so many people with my mom in the hospital.

Today is the Boston Marathon, I have no idea why they put them so close together.

It’s like some things are working hard at being normal, but we’re not there, not yet. Maybe not ever, really, with the people who are doggedly continuing this pandemic, sometimes at the ultimate cost, but not always to themselves.

It’s gray today, maybe drizzly, maybe not, it’s difficult to tell, but there’s no hint of sun in the sky. Feels more like November than October, but for the temperature. Still in the 70s.

If I’m being honest, I’d love today to be a day of nothing, but that’s not going to happen. I have a long drive ahead, and I’m not sure how long, it can vary so much with the traffic.

So I’m going to get on with all things Monday. Have a great day and a fabulous start to your week.

#WednesdayWisdom: It’s OK to stop

Standard

I was chatting with a friend on Twitter (HI!) who is watching that Korean show that everyone is talking about (“everyone,”), The Squid Game. I tried the first episode, and while the first part was interesting, the violence made me turn it off.

She was partially through, and found it disturbing enough she needed a break. I told her I just read an article on how it ended, and she’s considering doing the same. And that got me thinking.

Obviously.

Sometimes we grind though things because we feel some kind of obligation. There may not even be any external pressure, we just feel like we “should.” But while it’s OK for art to be challenging at times, it doesn’t have to be.

It’s also OK for entertainment to be entertaining. Isn’t it what it’s there for?

I’ve done it myself, I used to do it all the time, pushing through books I didn’t like, watching television shows I realized I dreaded sitting down for, shows that left me feeling tense, or uncomfortable.

And I’m not talking about those suspenseful shows that keep you edgy but you want to know, I mean like Housewives who only annoyed me.

We don’t have to sit thought it. We don’t have to sit through any of it. And if you’re curious, there is never a shortage of entertainment writers more than happy to explain in extensive detail every nuance, every twist, and every character.

Have a great Wednesday, and remember your free time is yours.

#TuesdayThoughts: Hurried.

Standard

This will be brief, I used up all my writing time this morning on the update about my mom. It’s tough finding a balance with the distance and the visits and the traffic.

And today, the weather. I think it’s raining.

It’s probably raining.

And I’m running, only not literally. Very figuratively, as I’ll be sitting in a car for an undetermined amount of time. The length of the trip is never predictable and never the same.

Have a great Tuesday.

#MondayThoughts: Docurecovery

Standard

It’s a gloomy Monday and despite the coffee, I’m not exactly peppy. I’ve been trying to shake myself awake since I woke up.

So far, no luck.

The situation with my mom is very draining, I think it’s claimed all of my energy reserves. And it’s tough to replenish them.

I’ve tried with a few documentary series, like LuLaRich, The Way Down, and 100 Foot Wave. They were all fascinating, at least, I recommend them. Especially the one about surfing, that was really interesting and it had the bonus of gorgeous, gorgeous locations, especially Portugal.

But that’s the way it’s going, try to get some stuff done, visit, wiped out in the evening. I think can safely say there’s no way NaNoWriMo is happening this year.

And that’s it for me today, I hope you have a fantastic Monday.
