#MondayThoughts: Condolences to Korea

Standard

Photo by Hisu lee on Unsplash. From the moment the news broke about the horrific crowd crush at a Halloween even in Itaewon, an area of Seoul, my heart broke. The death toll rose and rose and continues to rise; all those young, vibrant people, out for a fun night, gone forever.

Over the last year or so, while undergoing my own slow-moving horror, it’s felt like Korea has welcomed me through its art, specifically television. A generous host, it has offered me laughter, intrigue, romance, suspense, tears. The dramas have cocooned me, introduced me to people it’s fun to get to know over the span of a series, have kept my mind occupied with new words and new scenery and new foods.

I’ve gotten glimpses of culture I’d never see as a visitor. I’ve learned about the rituals of death and mourning.

And now, after so much death, there will be so much mourning.

I hope the families of the victims of this shockingly sad tragedy will find comfort and solace, and I offer both, even from half a world away. This will scar not only them but an entire nation, an entire generation whose peers lost their lives so quickly, so needlessly.

Please know we watch in sorrow along with you as the story continues to unfold.

Deepest, deepest condolences.

#FridayThoughts: Evolution at internet speeds.

Standard

It’s Friday, so first it’s #TVWatch, “Sci-fi silliness.” And on to Friday.

It’s another brightly sunny day today, and while yesterday was a bit of a rough one, I’m hoping today is a little smoother. But who knows.

The only way to see is to see.

That goes for Twitter too, which apparently is now under the ownership of elon musk, who is planning on taking the company private. Hmm.

But these social media giants come and go, and no doubt another will be along shortly to take its place. It’s evolution at internet speeds.

Besides, there’s not a thing we can do about it, so worrying about it won’t change anything. It is, as they say, what it is.

So that’s where I am this Friday, um, afternoon I guess I have to say if I’m going to write with any honesty. Feeling a downward slide but I’ll try to prevent it.

Maybe you can do the same.

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend.

#ThursdayThoughts ten world photo prompt: Back

Standard

Photo by Ron Lach on Pexels.com

Well I’m back with the #ThursdayTen! It’s been a while, but I thought today would be a good day to bring it back.

We’ll see if you feel the same.

Using the above image as a prompt, write a ten word story.

EXACTLY ten words.

Ready? Here’s mine.

James held the compressed essence of his enemies. War? Over.

#WednesdayWisdom: Be better than this.

Standard

It’s super sunny after yesterday’s rain, some leftover puddles here and there. The sky is pale and blue like it was washed clean.

Today I find myself deeply disappointed in humanity, and though that’s not an entirely unusual situation, it’s getting wearing. Which I suppose is the point.

But the comments about Pennsylvania senate candidate John Fetterman are incredibly disheartening and deeply disturbing. He is working at recovering from a stroke, and that doesn’t make him a bad person or unable to work as a Senator.

What is wrong with people?

Are we still so into the dark ages that compromised health means a person has no worth? Are they less of a person?

And do you understand the irony of this discussion as states across the country grant greater rights to a bundle of cells–that’s what it is, a bundle of cells–than the fully formed adult in whom they’re lodged?

A man who has had a stroke can’t be a Senator but maybe the bundle of cells can.

Just be better than this. Don’t couch ableism in feigned concern. And understand that people who have to do things differently, who look different, who talk differently, who move differently probably had to work a lot harder than you do to do all of those things.

And that takes courage and resolve.

Have a good Wednesday.

#TuesdayThoughts: Hello Chat Tuesday!

Standard

So I’ve decided to keep up my Tuesday writing tradition, now that the Mom Updates have very sadly concluded, with #ChatTuesday. Here’s the first one, “Searching for the light.” Hope you enjoy it.

It’s a rainy, rainy Tuesday, the kind where the light has a bit of a green tinge to it. It’s very quiet too, and I don’t know if that’s because people aren’t out and about or if the rain is hushing everything.

If there was a weather alert, I’ve missed it.

No lightning, no thunder. At least for now.

As we slip into Fall, November looming already, my mind is already on ice and snow and the freezing cold. On the pretty leaves turning to mush, and the bare branches.

It happens every year.

And yet it still feels like a surprise.

Anyway, that’s it for me today, I’m going to enjoy the gloom from inside. Have a great Tuesday and if you’re so inclined, check out Chat Tuesday!

#MondayThoughts: Caffeine and all.

Standard

It was a morning with a great workout and raspberry muffins, so for a Monday, that’s not too terrible. I’m not sure what the weather is doing, I’m not sure the weather knows what the weather is doing.

But my coffee hit the spot.

We are waiting for a news conference from the Attorney General of the United States about a foreign actor within the US. Tantalizing teaser.

Hope the information lives up to it.

Of course the mind immediately goes to the classified documents the government retrieved under warrant at Mar a lago. Yes I know that’s not properly punctuated.

No I don’t care.

Today is Monday, which means tomorrow is Tuesday, which means I’m not sure what I’m going to do over at Medium now that my Mom Updates are done. But I want to do something.

Hopefully you’ll hang with me as we figure it out together.

Anyway, that’s it for me today. Have a great Monday and let’s hope for big news at the press conference.

#FridayThoughts: It feels pretty inevitable.

Standard

It’s Friday, which means you can TV Watch with me! Today, “Three shows getting me through the week.” And now on to Friday.

You might tell by the time that I’m not a fast mover today. I did think about whether I really wanted to do a TV Watch, but figured why not? It took me a while, though. I’m feeling heavy.

I’m sure that’s to be expected.

It’s sunny and really warm, it’s supposed to hit 70 I think. It’s not as strange as you might imagine for mid-October; one year they had to call the marathon because of the heat.

That was weird.

I’m sure it will be chilly again soon enough, it feels pretty inevitable.

It’s incredible to think we’ve made it to Friday, another whole week gone, life has changed but also it hasn’t.

That’s a lot to get used to.

Anyway, that’s it for me this week. Have a great Friday and a restful weekend.

#ThursdayThoughts: Still not a prompt

Standard

I’m just not up to the task of a prompt this week, I’m sure you all understand. I’m still digesting and synthesizing and trying to adjust to the new reality.

The newish reality.

My mom was so sick for so long, it’s a strange transition.

And I don’t want to become one of those people where it’s all I talk about, but still, it hasn’t even been two weeks. Not even two weeks.

It feels like forever.

It feels like it didn’t happen.

Anyway, point is I’m trying to get my feet back under me, and it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe next week.

Maybe the week after.

Either way, I hope you have a great Thursday.

#WednesdayWisdom: “Be kind to yourself.”

Standard

I’m still pretty draggy, which is to be expected, I suspect. Also congested and sniffly but I took a COVID test and it was negative.

Could be anything.

It’s a sunny day, though, sunny and a bit chilly, not very. So that’s fine.

People have been very thoughtful, and there’s one refrain it’s so hard to take on board: “be kind to yourself.”

What does it mean, really? How do we do it?

I’ve taken it as listening to myself, no matter what it is, and not pushing too hard. Easier said than done.

There are always things that need attention. Always steps that need to be taken. Meals to be made, dishes to be washed.

The truth is I feel like a year’s worth of tired has caught up to me, all that treading water left my legs numb now that the water is gone.

Which is to be expected, I suspect.

I hope you figure out what being kind to you means, if only for today. Have a great Tuesday.

#TuesdayThoughts: Kilterish.

Standard

So I felt I needed one final #MomUpdate, “Epilogue.” And on to Tuesday.

It’s overcast again. I’m feeling less congested than yesterday, so maybe it really is allergies. Also it occurred to me that we’ve been masking for so long, we haven’t been as exposed to outdoor allegens.

So who knows.

It’s overcast and gray again today, weather I usually attribute to next month rather than this one. But it’s fine, it’s chilly and it’s supposed to be. It’s that time of year.

I was watching a Korean show that vanished from Hulu mid-watch, I cannot find it now. Maybe it never existed at all, it did seem like something I’d made up.

I’m going to have to subscribe to the Korean streaming channel to finish it, I think. I mean not like that’s some big burden, there will be a ton of stuff for me to watch on it.

I assume.

Anyway, that’s it for me today. Have a great Tuesday.
