#MondayThoughts: Cheerleader or saboteur

Standard

Do you ever get the idea to do something, get inspired to do it, and then have that little critical voice chip away at the plan, chunk by chunk, until you figure, eh, it’s not worth the effort?

Of course you have.

Unless you’re a unique kind of creature who also probably wingsuits off mountains and teaches salsa dancing to grizzly bears or something.

Give me a break, my exampler hasn’t yet become fully caffeinated.

We all have those moments when we can either don the Team Us! uniform or slouch in the bleachers in our decades-stained and threadbare “why bother” t-shirt, waiting to throw a sardonic look at anyone who glances in our direction. I agree, even putting on the Team Us! uniform can sound like a lot these days.

But.

As someone who is not me once said, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Which apparently can be traced back to Chaucer, and not, as it sounds, like a pyramid scheme hustler seeking investors.

If you don’t try, you’ve already failed, also said by someone who is not me, allegedly J.D. Barker but I have some suspicions he wasn’t the first to string those words together.

But I digress.

Your effort is your own to use as wish. And maybe some things aren’t worth it.

But the question remains.

What if they are?

Have a great Monday.

#MondayThoughts: Pandemic Portions

Standard

It’s sunnyish today but not really bright, and it’s still muddy brown outside, almost stubbornly so. I’m ready for the quick burst of Spring, but the world seems to have other ideas.

Meanwhile I’m on coffee #2, half-caff, of course, but another cup nonetheless. I need to do some cleaning and some clearing out and I’m hoping motivation can come in the form of a warm coffee cup.

Last week was busy busy, lots of running around, and this week offers a little more quiet, or so I hope. As I trundle into Monday, I note a lot of other people are also coming out of a pandemic food stupor.

We both know what I mean.

During the course of the pandemic, with so much not accessible, one thing that seemed to make the time go by, to make it more enjoyable was engaging with food. Many of us made our first loaves of bread; I baked regularly, and then consumed the results.

Sure it could have been worse, it always could be worse, and in such extreme circumstances, it doesn’t seem like a terrible way to deal with it all, but as we look hopefully toward the waning of this awful time, let’s all get real.

Maybe those cinnamon rolls aren’t exactly serving our health needs.

So I wave goodbye to indulgence within so much stark austerity, give a wistful smile to my baking shelf, and resolutely go onward with my oven cold.

At least for now.

Have a great Monday.

#MondayThoughts: Let’s get physical

Standard

Hey, get your mind out of the gutter. I’m a proper social distance lady. I am, OF COURSE, talking about exercise and nothing that requires fewer than six feet of distance.

I don’t know about you, but for me, less movement in general has made my workout more challenging. I think it’s very easy to put off exercise in these circumstances, or to melt into ourselves, returning to our native gelatinous slug state.

What? You mean I’m the only gelatinous slug around here? I should really talk to my travel agent, I don’t know what kind of planet they sent me to.

Anyway, this morning I mentally whined through about the first third of my workout. Or two-thirds. Probably two-thirds.

But by the end, when I finished, I felt amazing and calmer. Much calmer.

So sticking to or even starting an exercise routine will be key in getting through this. You probably know I’m partial to Daily Burn, but there are more and more online workouts available as the days go on. To help to stick to it:

  1. Pick something you like doing. This isn’t punishment.
  2. Try to do it at the same time every day.
  3. Pay attention to how you feel afterward.
  4. Be kind to yourself. This isn’t punishment. It’s self-care.

And with that, I hope you have a lovely Monday.

#MondayThoughts: No dilly-dallying!

Standard

You may not have noticed, but it’s Monday. All kinds of Monday. And here it’s cloudless and sunny and it feels like spring might not be a total myth.

There are things to do, my friends. You probably have a list of things to do right now, maybe sitting in front of you, maybe running through your brain like unruly kindergartners.

Things to do.

So…let’s get to them. After we’re finished here, of course.

It’s the first Monday of the month, and it seems as good a time as any to roll up our mind-sleeves and get to it. Whatever “it” may be.

And now, off we go. Have a lovely Monday.
