Opening Night is DAYS Away!

Standard

Well, after a super-late night tech rehearsal — on the heels of the debate (OK fine, yes I was late to rehearsal) — I’m a tad bit draggy today.

And incredulous. We open on Saturday night! All the props have been propped, the actors’ heads crammed full of lines, and “Witch, Please” will start its October run in just a matter of days.

DAYS.

This is not a drill. We’re back on the same stage we’ve used for our last two shows, Donny’s Skybox Theater at the Second City Training Center, and it feels great to be back in the space.

Do I sound giddy? I’m a little giddy.

We’ve got a ton of new material, a few old favorites, and so many laughs all ready to go. Oh, and I did I mention there’s booze?

I usually mention there’s booze.

If you’re in or around Chicago October 1, 8, 22 or 29 at 7 pm we’d love to see you there! Tickets are $13. Come hang out!

Reveal! Sketch Comedy Show Title and Image!

Standard

Well I promised you more on the sketch comedy show for which I’ve been fiendishly making props, and here it is! Me Inside Me’s new show is called “Witch, Please,” and will be running at Donny’s Skybox Theater at the Second City training center in October!

And we’re really excited about this one.

We’ve got our original cast from our first show, and I have to tell you, my co-writers are even funnier than ever, which you wouldn’t think was possible, but there you have it.

As always, there will be booze.

This show is fast-paced, really varied, and this time around, we’re doing music again. And let’s not forget about the props. Obviously the whole show is about the props.

Though the most impressive of the props is being fabricated by someone else, and that sketch alone should be worth the price of admission!

Was that all vague enough for you? Good, then come see the show!

The Show Must Go On! Or Start. Whichever.

Standard

Well, the show opens tomorrow! I’m nervous and excited and not sure, exactly, what to do with myself. We have to dress up a bit. Fancy.

There is honestly little else going on in my brain right now, though I’m probably not as big a bundle of nerves as the actors. They’re pretty amazing, and I think they will have it down and do an incredible job.

It’s been a year of meeting and working with some remarkable people, and through that, some growth. I tried on a new medium, couldn’t get it to fit quite right, tried on something medium-adjacent — comedic songwriting — and found it felt warm and tickly. Or should I say, warm & fuzzy.

OK, that is a joke only I would get, because one of my songs in the show is called “Warm & Fuzzy.” So it was hilarious, but really only to me. I digress. Ish.

I promise the whole show is much funnier than that.

So by next week, I will have much to report, after the audience reacts to our work for the first time. Assuming there is an audience. Let’s hope there’s an audience.

Hey, if you’re in Chicago, come see the show!

And Then This Happened

Standard

So yesterday I wrote about starting Writing 5. That’s not happening today. Life takes some wild, unexpected turns, and yesterday held a hairpin one.

The sketch comedy writing I’ve been doing is at Chicago’s famed Second City Theater. Yesterday, a restaurant next door to the theater caught fire, destroying the Second City offices, and possibly many of the classrooms, though that part isn’t clear. Although looking at some of the pictures from the Chicago Fire Department in this article, it looks like the conference room where I had Writing 1 and Writing 4 is likely ruined.

It’s sad to see those hallways, those escalators we so casually went up and down — before class, during breaks, after class for drinks — coated in rubble. There’s the corner near that glass balcony where my classmates and I would stand and chat; now it’s coated in soot.

Reportedly there were some injuries, though, thankfully, apparently all minor. But I definitely did not expect to miss class because something so awful had happened to a place so iconic.

So hopefully we will kick off this odyssey next week, but in the meantime, I wish all the amazing people at Second City trying to make the best of a terrible, unexpected situation well. It’s clear that the one thing that wasn’t damaged in the fire was the Second City spirit.

Yes, that was cheesy. And yes, it still had to be said. I stand by my cheesiness.
