Another gloomy-looking day, possibly with rain, possibly not. September is flying by, though I feel like I said that about every month so far. October looms ahead.
October. A year since my mom died.
So there’s that.
A couple weeks ago I was on the very exciting topic of reorganizing my side-by-side freezer. Yes, yes, I know, you’re on the edge of your seat, but so far my systems are working. I had some fridge bins on hand, and I used to hold things in plastic bags, ready forms of meat (I don’t love handling raw meat, but my body does not work on vegetarianism, and vegan products apparently gave me a probable kidney stone so that’s my best bet) and ground turkey/chicken breasts, with some extra room on the shelves for other things.
Organizing made me realize just how many plastic bags I was using (not great, I know) so I got a bunch of different silicone bags and containers. Freezer glass also works but I drop things too often.
I’m really happy with the silicone bags, they stand up for filling and close more easily and faster than the plastic zip bags, and they’re dishwasher safe. I got this kind and this kind (affiliate links). The stuff I’ve frozen isn’t icy (thought it hasn’t been that long) and froze well.
I also got a set of four of these silicone containers, and I’ve used one so far from freezer to microwave for tomato-based leftovers (I used the red one, I’m no fool). It did great and washed well too. I did loosen the lid in addition to lifting the vent because I wasn’t sure how much venting it would do.
But the difference this has made in terms of cooking and making quick meals is incredible. While anything you get will have to survive the freezer, I do wonder if even Dollar Store containers would do.
The silicone bags are trickier, because there are a lot of products that claim silicone but are actually a mix of silicone and plastic, or just have a silicone closure. The ones I listed above were the best I could find that weren’t $100 for six or seven (you know the brand I mean).
So while it may seem impossible to organize something like a freezer that refuses to cooperate, sometimes all you need are the right tools. That goes for any job.
And don’t be afraid to be creative or reuse what you have.
That also goes for any job.
And with that spellbinding post, I shall call it a week. Have a fantastic Friday and a magical weekend.
