I’m late today with this post. I’ve got a bit of headache, and I don’t know if it’s because I ate something, because I’ve been reducing caffeine the last few days, or the state of the world.

Possibly all of the above.

I may have more coffee, I mean half-caff is barely caffeinated, right?

Can’t hurt the headache.

Could exacerbate what I think was an MSG reaction though so it’s a pretty complicated and delicate balance.

Well I went for the more coffee. Wish me luck.

There are so many things in life that are a balance that way, where too much in any direction isn’t good. I found that with my diet, during the pandemic, post-pandemic, during my mom’s illness, in the year of grief that followed her death.

I was baking a lot, as it’s a fun, productive use of time, but that also meant I was eating the results. And I’ve been eating more than I needed. Until I really took a look at it, I was feeling bloated and sluggish all the time.

Now, interestingly, I have more energy. I won’t go into my approach because what works for me may not work for you; one person’s tool is another’s weapon. Make sure you listen to what your body needs and try to eat mostly nutritious foods most of the time.

I’m also being mindful of moving more, and I think backing (!) away from intense workouts has helped that. I had to, due to whatever it was with my back, and then it was slow getting into movement again, as I didn’t want to end up with another injury.

But if you don’t exhaust yourself with a session of exercise, you are more inclined to walk a little or putter more or a bunch of other things that add up to more movement. Or so I’ve found.

We are so hard on ourselves, demanding perfection in everything, and it’s exhausting. So maybe let’s not think about perfection.

Let’s just think about “better.” Let’s use how we feel as guide, not any arbitrary outside measurement.

And with that, I wish you a wonderful Monday.
