It’s sunny and cold, not super cold, but cold, so almost typical for a Chicago January. It’s our first Friday of the year, I could have had jury service but did not, and I’m generally mellow today and less wordy than usual.

Weird, right?

The moods come and they go, as they do for everyone. No one is the same thing all the time.

I assume. Maybe some people. But when you think about it, wouldn’t that be strange? To always be the same?

My brain is going some creative places.

That’s not too bad.

I tried something new with the Thursday Ten yesterday and it it did not go well, overall. At this point, I’m on the fence about the prompt anyway, but I thought the twist was fun and different, and a few people seemed to agree.

This isn’t to whine but to say not everything you try will work out. And not everything you think is awesome other people will think is awesome. And it is up to you how much energy you want to put into getting people to think it’s awesome.

Our energy is not limitless, and I am finally understanding that my own belongs to me, first and foremost. I do not have to mentally exhaust myself for the sake of others, leaving nothing for my own cup.

The truth is people don’t even notice it anyway, they take it for granted, they imagine they’ve given themselves that whole boost and never even see the footprint in your hands. They thrive off of your energy and they do not care what it leaves you with.

Huh, I didn’t expect this particular turn to day, it might have been some visits in my dreams from people I realized far too late often took but rarely gave. Dreams are weird that way, they can leave a shadow for most of the rest of the day, even if you don’t remember them in detail.

And maybe that’s my own journey for this year, curating my use of energy. I’ve already started with reforming how I exercise and get movement into my day, and I’m pleased with that.

So now to firmly fill my own cup first. It’s not rude, it’s self-defense.

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend.
