It’s sunny and warm, and my inner Veruca Salt doesn’t want to do any of the big people tasks ahead for the day. Maybe it was the time change; maybe it’s because she never quite goes away for any of us.
We just subdue her with occasional golden eggs.
Speaking of golden eggs, the strange mystery of Kate Middleton continues. Not seen in public since before Christmas, yesterday the palace issued a photo that news agencies retracted because they thought it was manipulated. Which it turned out it was; today Kate issued an “apology” saying she herself edited it, but they didn’t release an unedited version.
Then there were claims she was “spotted” in a car with William today, but that photo only shows the vague outline of a woman with her head facing away in shadow behind what appears to be tinted glass. Is it Kate?
Maybe.
But if Kate is well enough to edit photos and leave the house, why not a clear photo of her? At this point, even if her “abdominal surgery” was some kind of plastic surgery that requires a long recovery no one wanted to acknowledge, why not a picture that confirms it’s her?
Why make it weirder?
She’s not a person I particularly like, to be clear, I’m far from a fan, but if one of the most prominent women in the world can simply vanish like this for months, what does it say about the disposability of women overall? We are, every one of us, so lacking in importance and uniqueness that whether we’re here or we’re not here, whether we’re well or unwell, none of it matters enough to provide any real information?
As someone reminded me, this is a woman who was propped up for photos the moment she delivered her children, so health and privacy do not seem to go hand in hand. What on earth could be going on that they continue to avoid unequivocal, let’s just be honest, proof of life at this point?
And if she does return to public life after March 31, as previously suggested, we may never know what actually happened, and that’s OK. But if she doesn’t…
Perhaps we’re all too steeped in true crime, but it strikes a familiar tone, doesn’t it, a woman who is apparently missing in plain sight, and no one seems to mind. Perhaps that’s what’s creating the pushback.
Or maybe it’s because it’s already weird and they keep making it weirder. It’s hard to know.
Anyway, that’s it for me on this Monday, have a great day.
