(Pop art-inspired image of a woman with red hair sitting on a grave in a graveyard with a spooky moon with a branch in front of it behind her; Image @DCroucher.)

With all that’s going on in the world, we haven’t had much fun around here lately, and I certainly haven’t done a #ThursdayTen in a while.

I thought about saving these Derek Croucher (@DCroucher) images for Thursday, but I feel like they deserve a little more room than ten words can convey, so today I am introducing Impromptu Prompt! (#ImpromptuPrompt)

It’s as it sounds: on any day, at any time, I might give you a prompt. And today I offer it without any rules at all; your story can be as long or short as you like. You can share it if you want, you can keep it to yourself. This is for fun and fun only.

And today you get multiple versions of an image from which to choose. Called “The Gardener” by @Dcroucher, he’s created variations on the original, the sepia below, in various styles.

You can pick one, or do more than one. Or combine them. As I said, no real rules (besides those of human decency obviously, no bigotry of any kind).

Today’s Impromptu Prompt is really about genre, and how the sense of each can greatly impact the feel, the story, and the characters. The possibilities of a world are often contained within the genre itself; the limits and abilities of a character are as well.

One of these images might appeal to you more than the others, might inspire you more. That was certainly the case for me.

We like what we like.

So take inspiration from whichever strikes your fancy, and write whatever it inspires. No need to limit yourself. If it can fit in a response, feel free. If it’s longer, do whatever suits. This is free play but with an image prompt.

Since this is a brand-new thing for the blog, we’ll see how it goes. I’ll likely post my own story in a future post, so keep an eye out!

In addition to the featured one, here are our other options (all credits @DCroucher; image descriptions provided as captions). And check the link to his Spoutible profile above, because as I was wrote this post, he was producing more, so there may be some I’ve missed!

Sepia-toned image of a young girl in a cemetery, she’s looking directly at the camera, wearing old-fashioned dress.
Brightly colored image of a girl with huge, impassive blue eyes in a short blue dress with puffed sleeves and pink hair, in a cemetery filled with blue and pink balls and a bright blue sky.
Young steampunk style woman whose body is made of jointed glass, in a metal victorian-style bodice and dress. Her face is entirely human, and you can just make out a cemetery behind her.
Woman with a white face and dripping dark triangles at her eyes, a black diamond in her forehead in an armor-type dress in a cemetery with sparks of flame in various places.
A young woman who looks like a demon with dark eyes and streaks on her hands in dark dress in a foreboding cemetery with crows flying in the background.
Watercolor image of a young woman with purple hair in jeans and a jacket sitting on a large square stone in a cemetery with a softly multicolor sky.
A charcoal sketch of a sad-looking young woman with straight blowing hair mostly pulled back, looking down. She has a scar on her cheek. She’s in a cemetery partially shrouded in mist.

Hope you have fun! I plan to, and have an outstanding Tuesday!
