Somehow we’ve made it back around to Friday, after a week that was a blur for me. So many details to manage.

That’s life, I guess.

Today I’m wearing my “But her emails” shirt, with the thoughts of what people will accept just to not have a woman in charge. And how much further they’ll sink not to have a Black and Asian woman in charge.

Republicans of Texas have taken Democrats as political prisoners. That’s not an exaggeration; they cannot go anywhere without police “escorts.” Republicans have given them “permission slips” they have to use to leave, as though they are not colleagues but subordinates. As though they are employees or property.

And I think anyone with a functioning braincell can imagine why the Democrats, especially Black Democrats, would not want to go anywhere with these “escorts.”

The fear is founded.

Rep. Nicole Collier is LITERALLY IMPRISONED in the chamber, as they will not let her leave without one of those “escorts,” and, well, we’ve already talked about that.

This is so far out of the range of “normal” and “politics” it’s landed close to the other side of the world in a country abbott is getting his tactics from.

It’s not a political squabble. It’s not politicking. It is full-blown fascism.

Political speech is protected by the First Amendment. Including the political speech of politicians.

The right to due process is protected by the 4th and 14th Amendments. The ways abbot and republicans’ actions in this situation violate due process could fill an entire law school exam blue book.

The right to elect your political representatives, freedom from discrimination due to political beliefs, on and on and on, these actions hack away at the core of the Constitution itself.

But.

Who’s going to rectify it?

And we’re right back in the beginning again. Because people chose outright fascism over wildly qualified and competent women. People chose fascism and all that rips away over having to acknowledge that not everyone in the world is exactly like them and they’re still people.

Sometimes I think about all the other species of human that they’ve found in the fossil record, the ones who branched off into nothing, who disappeared.

And I don’t think we survived because we’re the best.

I think we survived because we’re the worst.

Anyway, I’m sorry I couldn’t deliver on more upbeat today, but it is what it is. I hope you have a great Friday anyway, and a relaxing weekend.
