Well. Well. Well.
Is that the sun in the sky or the overwhelming, decisive Democratic victories shining from afar?
What a night.
And there were so many wins, big, small, and in-between. I don’t want to give the “small” wins any less value because right now, they are incredibly meaningful.
Let me set the scene for you with election eve. The narcissistic fascist party, or “Narcifa,” if you will, and please do, were so steeped in their “wins,” so sure of their power, that on the very cusp of the election they did the following:
- Kept the government shut down so that they could take away health insurance subsidies;
- Cut off food assistance for people;
- Knowing full well that many of their major donors and corporations heavily rely on that food assistance income;
- Falsely claimed they could not use the funds set aside specifically to pay these benefits during a government shutdown;
- Were ORDERED by a court to pay the benefits;
- donald said he would NOT COMPLY with the court order to feed people;
- Destroyed an entire wing of the White House to BUILD A BALLROOM.
- HOSTED A GREAT GATSBY PARTY FOR HALLOWEEN.
Add in the unrepentant gestapo tactics of his thugs, a criminal trial over a thrown sandwich in which the guy claimed it “exploded” and he FELT A SANDWICH through his BALLISTIC VEST.
So the republican tactic since the beginning of time has been essentially three-fold. Make people think they could become “rich” at any moment while stoking their greed so they can keep what they don’t and will never have; and get them angry and resentful over “other” people.
And then if there is something not soothed by the other two, blame it on the Democrats.
It’s worked wonders so far. That’s how we got that guy in the White House again, despite the previous record-breaking food lines and a pandemic that nearly wiped out humanity.
And republicans feel, pretty securely, they can heap any kind of abuse they want on their constituents, so long as they follow those three prongs.
Only.
Now the curtain has been drawn back. There are no Democrats to hide behind. For example:
“Democrats won’t end the shutdown!”
“Why? What do they want?”
“For you to keep your affordable health care!”
It doesn’t play well. And that’s what led professional weenie Mike Johnson to admonish a typically friendly Fox person not to “get lost in the facts.”
So here we are, when even the people who laughed at our “tears” who wanted to “own” us are finding themselves on the crying end. People they know have been swept up and disappeared; their livelihoods are suffering under tariffs and a preference, from the very government they elected, for foreign goods over what they’re producing.
They’re watching boats get blown out of the water with no evidence, they’re seeing military deployed to American cities, they’re seeing citizens brutalized in the the streets for that free speech they like so much, they’re seeing US money sent to other countries while their guy refuses to provide anything at home, they’re seeing themselves or their neighbors go hungry and meanwhile the tax money they still pay on their checks that aren’t enough to live off of is going to a ballroom and a Great Gatsby party.
They have seen the men behind the curtain, and it’s never been more apparent they are not among them and never will be.
But we all have one power left.
That’s voting.
Mississippi did it and broke its republican supermajority. Virginia did it and the state is now glowing blue. New Jersey did it. Detroit did it. Cincinnati did it. Boston did it.
New York did it. Oooh boy did New York do it. That’s going to be interesting to watch.
Too many places to name looked at what is happening and said no, no more.
And thank goodness for California. Prop 50 passed, which means that the state can redistrict to balance out the gerrymandering from Texas.
Which is my long twisted, let’s call it my yellow brick road, to the point.
The men behind the curtain are simply men. There is no magic. There is no inherent power.
Gerrymandering only works if the people who voted for republicans in the past do again.
They’ve been reliable, but that was before it was all exposed for what it is. Republicans only have power if you hand it to them.
And no one has to.
Congratulations, nationwide, for such spectacular results! Truly this was excellent work. Let’s keep the election momentum going, and rid us all of the red.
I mean, after all, red is usually a sign of an infection, right?!
This nation has has a nasty fever but popping the pill of last night was a great start. We can end this national fever dream.
Have an awesome Wednesday.
