It’s dark and gray day here, perfect weather for grinding through, so if you’re having a bright sunny day, feel free to borrow it. Because today, my dear, dear hypothetical reader, today we are going to do our The Thing.
Or at least make a start on our The Thing.
Most of us have one, except for those relentlessly efficient types who live with an empty inbox and end the day with nothing but checkmarks. Those efficient types might be wondering right now, what is The Thing?
What a convenient thing to wonder. The Thing is a task that looms large, that you do not want to deal with, that has to be done, one way or another. Often the largest barrier is mental.
Though sometimes our The Things are as bad as we expect them to be and then that dreading is seems worthwhile.
Nonetheless, today is the day I have to at least start my The Thing. I don’t want to.
And I’m hoping you’ll join me, even if you don’t want to.
I mean your The Thing, not my The Thing, with The Things it’s really every person for themselves.
Such is life.
And it can vary greatly from person to person, we each have our sticking points. Even the notoriously tidy Monica from Friends had her secret closet. So I revise the above, even the relentlessly efficient among us have a The Thing.
I’m ready to call it universal, though feel free to say otherwise.
But the best part of a The Thing is when you’ve done it, when you’ve gotten it out of the way, when you’ve faced it and resolved it as well as you can. That’s worth the tough initial push.
Sometimes I even set myself a timer, depending on the task, and say I only have to work on it for X minutes. I can keep going when the timer goes or take it as a break or a stopping point. It’s totally artificial but it helps.
If you have tricks, please feel free to share!
And with that, I leave you to ready myself for The Thing. Good luck with yours, and have an amazing Wednesday!
