It’s a sunny Wednesday morning after VP Harris turned donald in a quivering puddle of rage and narcissism, and I’ve got to tell you, it feels pretty good.
Here, without adornment, is my absolute favorite moment of the debate, cued to the response; feel free to watch the whole clip if you prefer:
It was a political rapier that cut to the quick, the impact on trump immediate and obvious. VP Harris was masterful in raising donald up to let him crash down, to stoke the fires of his rage virtually no one else cares about.
I ended up having this exchange with my dad.
Me: Harris really burst his balloon.
My dad: It was worse than that.
Me: Worse than that? How?
My dad: She handed him the balloon, said “here’s a nice shiny balloon for you. (Pause.)
My dad: And then she popped it.
Have to say, I couldn’t argue with that.
There was no quarter for donald on that stage, and he didn’t know what to do with himself, especially when the most outrageous of his statements were fact-checked back to him. You could see the arrogance and disbelief pouring off him; every single gesture, every single expression read “how dare they question me.”
He almost went so far as to say so when he claimed he didn’t have to answer a question about whether he would sign a national abortion ban.
And let’s be clear, he didn’t say he wouldn’t.
Of course the double standards were evident, and I may get into that in another piece, but there wasn’t one moment during which donald came off as “presidential.” Not that he ever did, if you remember there were all those “that’s the moment he became presidential” when he’d take back what he said or did that prompted it ten minutes later, but last night, the full display was that of a totally unbalanced, unprepared, uncomprehending conman out to get the big score.
That’s what he is and what he’s after.
He ranted about the charges against him; he claimed yet again without evidence that Pres. Biden is the real criminal; he told horrendous, xenophobic, racist and baseless lies about immigrants invading apartment buildings and killing and eating pets. Statements all so outrageous and incredible they couldn’t even be “both-sided” in the moment.
He sounded like a man who stands on a streetcorner and goes on endlessly, not an unhoused person, mind you, but a person who believes to his core he is entitled to an audience. And returns to his penthouse triumphant when he’s coerced people into listening.
It’s not like he’s reportedly big on consent.
It’s odd today there are no calls for him to drop out, no immediate pressure or puzzlement at how he was allowed on a stage in such a state. He rarely finished a complete idea, he roved from topic to topic as though searching for the treasure he buried and made no map.
Instead the mantra has been “he had a bad night,” a grace Pres. Biden certainly wasn’t afforded after what actually was a bad night and not a nonsensical ascension aided by an enemy dictator half a world away. No one is calling him what he is: a person of limited intellect and no morality who was handed a ton of money and an army of yes men who isn’t fit for office.
Well. Almost no one.
VP Harris is, and she did it in my second favorite exchange from the debate:
Again, I have it cued to my favorite moment, when she tells him military leaders think he’s a disgrace, but the entire exchange is worth watching. It was also surprisingly difficult to find this clip of the disgrace being told he’s a disgrace, but isn’t that the way things things have gone.
Anyway, I could probably keep going for ages, given how fantastic VP Harris was in the debate, but instead I guess I’ll sprinkle a little wisdom in since it’s Wednesday, and that’s this:
Don’t challenge VP Harris to a debate. Not if you want to keep all your limbs.
Have a great Wednesday.
