Yesterday it was pouring rain and today it’s sunny like nothing ever happened. Things that were put off due to the weather need to be done today.

Such is life.

Somehow we’re closing in on the final day of the year, and yet it feels like this one just started. What we didn’t know last January breaks my heart.

What we know now breaks those remaining pieces into sharp, tiny shards.

There was good in this year too, for me personally; I went to two places I’ve always wanted to see, Costa Rica and Newfoundland. I probably won’t travel for a long while now.

Such is life.

Things are going to change, in many ways, in ways we may not have decided on yet, over the next expanse of 12 months. I’m not a believer in resolutions, beyond the self-affirming ones. Like saying you’ll do something you already do or quit something you already don’t do.

Instant win.

Like quit smoking if you’re not a smoker; be tidy if you’re a tidier. From day one, you’ve already won.

I’m low on optimism for the year ahead, I won’t lie and pretend I’m not. Those balloons of hope I could spot bobbing on the surface of even rough seas seem to have burst.

Mostly.

Maybe there are still one or two out there, behind waves too tall to see over. We will only know when we hit the crest.

But digging my heels in and clinging to the year won’t stop the calendar page from turning, the time will do as it wishes, as it always does.

Our only choice is what we do with it.

I saw a suggestion pointing out that the time will pass no matter what, we might as well do something we want to do, get better at something, create something, to very loosely paraphrase.

And that might be one of those distant hope balloons I was talking about.

With that, I wish you a wonderful Monday, and our New Year’s tradition will be tomorrow!
