It’s sunny, not horrendously cold but chilly, and today I am thinking about how the way you think things may go isn’t always the way they go.
I mean, no kidding, right?
But, for example, with this blog, some posts hit and some do not. Occasionally, while writing them, I know which will likely resonate, but most of the time, I can’t be sure.
Here, in a space that is only mine, I write what I have to say at a length it takes to say it. The words come or they don’t, and the process is sometimes flawlessly smooth but often halting.
There have been many times I thought I was emptying my own mind only to find there were a bunch of people feeling the same way. And there are times where I write something and only the regulars take the ride.
The weird part is when I think I’ve written one and get the other.
It’s not only writing that’s like that. It’s not even only artistic endeavors, though I’m sure anyone who does something creative knows that feeling of surprise, good and less good.
But it’s everything. A trip to the grocery store you’re dreading may be as easy as ever it was, with surprise treasures. An errand you think might take 20 minutes ends up taking half the day.
Life is unpredictable.
How original of me to come up with that entirely by myself as definitely no one has ever said that before. Perhaps this week is a theme week and I didn’t even realize it.
Cliches.
Eh. There are worse things.
There I go again.
Everyone is different about unpredictability. Some people ride it like catching a wave, exhilarating all the way to the shore or however far surfers go because it will shock you to learn I’m not a surfer.
And some see each unexpected hill as a personal affront, not that I’d know from my own experience or anything.
Some of us enjoy a flat, even road. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
Life, however, doesn’t really care which of us are which.
So we’ll take our hills and valleys, our pebbles and boulders, our mountains and molehills, and on we trudge, our vision going only as far as it goes.
And with that I wish you today’s journey on the type of road of your choosing. Have a great Tuesday.
