It’s a gray Monday and I was going to say “Thursday” so we’re off to a roaring start. There’s that Ray Bradbury story, “All Summer in a Day,” this is All Week in a Morning.

Apparently.

I’m on the downward slope of a migraine, but the weather isn’t helping matters. I guess that’s the nature of Spring.

Volatile.

And I was about to say it looks like rain but the weather tells me it’s snow. Which seems weird because it’s also 39 degrees F, so…Weird.

I am trying to get into the groove of things with a lot of extraneous noise, and, you may not believe it, but that doesn’t make it easy.

Shocker.

Distractions abound. Everyone’s eyes on their own papers.

We’re about to get into a big round of minding other people’s business.

Trust me, I understand the urge, I am, at my very core, a nosy person. I want to know EVERYTHING. Maybe it’s because I’m writer; maybe it’s why I’m a writer.

The stuff I make up is often more interesting than actual life.

But not always.

As we continue our unnecessary and very coordinated freefall into the unknown, we may get a false sense of control by looking to our right and looking to our left and seeing how other people are falling.

We cannot stop the descent ourselves, not fully, not where we are, not as individuals. So to combat that feeling of unruly, forced motion, we may start to think we can get a little leverage, a little stability, by shouting directions at our fellow fallers.

I’m not even going to be specific because I’m sure you’ve seen enough examples, or maybe even have a little twinkle of conscience because you may be realizing you’ve tried this on for size.

That’s OK. We can’t stop doing what we don’t know we’re doing.

I think it is best for us to use this time to weave the best and most stable nets we can. And none of us can do that alone.

Look, we don’t have to allow everyone in our nets. There are plenty of people who should be left to fall on their own and to do what they can with their own bootstraps.

But as we navigate this new and unpleasant space, let’s try to add, not subtract. Let’s mind our business where we should and join with others where it helps.

We are all just people, doing the best we can.

Have a great Monday.
