Last night we had heavy rain and thunder, lightning illuminating the sky. The drops pelted against the windows, and yet today, the sky is cloudless.

Funny how that happens.

Thank you, Deb, for the coffee, but even more so for letting me know my words yesterday reached you. It’s such an amazing thing, isn’t it, to know that I can be sitting here, just me and my screen and, of course, my coffee, and out there, wherever you are in your spot reading, it all makes sense. Thank you.

And now Tuesday.

A few days ago…a week ago? Who knows, time is weird right now. Some period of time ago, I saw a post about some white male politicians getting testerical about white voters being “left behind.”

It’s a phrase we hear often, but we never stop to question what it means. If hanging with me digitally gets you to do one thing, I hope it’s going to the beginning of things and asking if even the premise makes sense.

Because this does not.

“Left behind” what? “Left behind” where?

I think what bothers me the most is how the onus is placed everywhere but on the voters themselves, like they have the right to tag along anywhere they choose, the pesky little brother who will not be deterred.

“Left behind.”

It conjures for me the image of a school bus pulling off, and these voters still in their pajamas eating their Alpha-Bits one by one, spelling dirty words in the bowl. It’s their mom’s job to get them dressed, their older sister’s job to get them to the stop, the bus driver’s job to wait as long as it takes until they blearily appear and have to be cajoled onto the bus.

Let’s be honest, white men are the only demographic whose merit doesn’t matter. And if you want to argue about that, go examine the experience of the current cabinet prior to appointment and get back to me. Compare some of the backgrounds of SCOTUS members before the bench.

Consider your local management staff.

See I have this sneaking suspicion that what “left behind” really means is losing that privilege. “Left behind” means not getting the head start.

“Left behind” means waiting at the bus stop with everyone else.

Because people are increasingly reluctant be the pillars for someone else’s privilege. And these aggrieved white men truly believed they’re owed that.

I am not pro-coddling, clearly. And we’ve tried to do it and the results still got us here. They’re playing a mind game, they are moles working for the other side.

We will not win them over because they absolutely do not want what we want.

We have to find other ways.

And with that, I wish you a wonderful Tuesday.

Buy me a cup of coffee!
