It’s another gray one, foggy, but no rain predicted. It keeps reminding me of those thugs skedaddling because of a little whipping snow.
And I looked up the etymology of “skedaddle,” because I do that pretty frequently with fun but slightly obscure words or idioms these days, as most things have terrible origins.
It turns out that it’s believed it originated as a “hasty retreat” during the Civil War.
So…talk about the exact right word.
Anyway, we did not make much or good progress with the doors yesterday, as my dad put it, we had a “Mount Everest of a learning curve.”
That is the truth.
So we are endeavoring to work smarter today. If this kitchen was newer, it would be much easier, like a snap-together replica. But all the holes are in the wrong places for the new hinges, and they don’t sell hinges for this system anymore, which is how we did the open shelves in the first place.
So if you do decide to go with an Ikea system, always, always, ALWAYS buy extra hardware and put it somewhere you can find it. You may need it eventually.
I think the layout of the kitchen is the best it can be, it’s a small galley kitchen, and that can’t be changed without taking down some walls. If this works, it’s a super cheap kitchen refresh. The new handles I bought look good on the drawer and cabinet I tested them on.
I’d watched a few videos from this woman who renovated an entire dilapidated $1 house with her dad, and I thought last night as they effortlessly built a deck for her pup, surely my dad and I could hang a few doors.
Pause for possible impending irony.
I mean as he asked me for a slip wrench and I handed it to him, I remarked on how many times I’ve handed him tools over my lifetime. I put together piece after piece of furniture over the last year and before as well. I remarked to him this project is like making a model at a 1:1 scale.
We’ve got to be able to hang a few doors.
We’ll see tomorrow. Triumphant or defeated, I’ll let you know either way.
Have a great Thursday.
