It’s sunny, warmer than it has been but still chilly for many, and here we are in a brand-new year.
Well, not as new as it was.
Sorry, I had to interrupt myself to call my members of Congress. Have you called yours? If not, I can wait, and then we can continue together.
All good?
Excellent.
Last year–it’s already last year–I talked about grim determination. Honestly I went into it thinking we would have some better days.
It’s already challenging that expectation.
But we cannot let that be the thing that makes us rise and fall with the tide. Back to grim determination.
Look, I was hoping that my first post back after the break would be warm and flowery. Crocuses peeking up out of the snow.
Silly me. It’s still January and we’re a long way from spring, even early spring.
But we have to remember, we have a part to play. Sometimes it’s a very small part, it can seem a very small part. So much of what is happening right now is beyond our contol.
That doesn’t mean all our small parts don’t add up.
We are at a crossroads right now. There have been many points of no return; whatever we build after will be different than what was before.
But this is a junction with a rockslide behind it.
Everybody grab your pickaxes.
It’s not that I have any special insight or guidance, I’m as agog as the rest of the world, shocked by republicans who don’t seem to have any stated principle or platform that cannot be reversed in a moment of convenience or profit.
By republicans who have claimed to practically own the Constitution who also seemingly have no issue with its casual overthrow.
By republicans who don’t need a crystal ball to read the future, and yet grab the blindfolds by the handful.
Where we are is where we are. One foot in front of the other, and off we go.
Have a great Monday.
