It is cold cold in Chicago today, currently -1 F (-18 C) and that’s after it warmed up a little. Schools are canceled and we’ve been advised to stay in if we can.

Next week doesn’t look much better, temperature-wise.

I had a whole big ordeal trying to put up some blackout curtains in my bedroom. First I had to figure out how to get them up since the structure didn’t allow for a traditional rod and I wanted to leave the blinds in place.

I found a tension-rod-based room-divider thingy, and that actually worked pretty well, although for the curtain rod length my dad actually had to cut down one of the pieces, which he told me about 45 minutes before I stopped trying to make it work and let him cut it.

But the curtains…wow the curtains. They were delayed and delayed and then I canceled one order and placed another and THAT was delayed and then I finally got them and got them up and…

They were too short. They were an inch shorter than they were supposed to be, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but with the grommet placement, it didn’t work.

And the color wasn’t what it looked like at all, they are far more gray.

UGH.

I tried to make them work in various ways, to make do, but when they did nothing to help insulate against the cold, I said forget it. They’re not what I want, they aren’t what they were supposed to be, and I want something better.

Here’s where we might get a little less frivolous.

We are so conditioned to “good enough” with tons of aspects of our lives. We are worn down to be glad for something not horrible after a year of unrelenting horrible, one thing after another after another.

But it is OK.

To wake up.

And want something different.

Whether its curtains that actually are what they are supposed to be.

Or a government that actually is what it’s supposed to be.

We deserve better.

But we need to demand better.

WE need to do it. WE need to be in constant contact with our representatives. WE need to know what our state and local governments are doing and where they stand.

We can want better. Let’s do what we can to get it.

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend. And if you’re also in the cold, please stay warm and safe!
