It’s another rainy day here. Not that dramatic kind of rain, the type that looks moody, that runs down window panes theatrically, but just enough rain to make the ground wet, to make people look miserable.

But not enough for an umbrella.

At least yet. Maybe later.

It’s fine, I like the rain, it’s better than a lying sunshine. Although it’s pretty warm today, too.

I was thinking today, while it looks cozy outside, about how almost all my lounge pants now have pockets.

Such a small thing, only it isn’t. The level of ease and comfort they provide is almost disproportionate.

Women famously are not provided lots of pockets.

There are so many things like that, aren’t there, that rob tiny pieces of our attention, all the time, all day. Uncomfortable shoes; overemphasis on appearance; the denial of our full humanity as people.

Well.

That last one is kind of the summing up of all the rest.

Many of us have rejected that which we don’t like. I wear comfortable shoes nearly exclusively, unless I absolutely have to wear something else.

But why isn’t that “something else” inherently comfortable?

I suppose this isn’t frivolous, but we live in a world where women are expected to be uncomfortable in some way, in at least one way or multiple ways, every moment of every day.

And we are supposed to accept that without complaint. We all know there are a bunch of terms for us if we don’t.

We are not allowed to point out that we are absorbing the discomfort of others, or that others are making us uncomfortable.

Who agreed to this deal?

I know I didn’t. And trust me, I’ve felt the repercussions of refusing to accept it in a multitude of ways. And I also find myself in situations where I can’t even do that.

I’m not sure what sent me down this path today, something about the rain and my hard-won pockets. A world desperate to regress at our expense and my bright images of the future fading away.

Well that’s not frivolous at all. Sorry.

I guess these times are not frivolous times. It’s very difficult to keep it light.

Anyway, that’s it for me this week. Please remember to contact your reps. Have a great Friday and wonderful weekend.
