Not entirely sure what the weather is like, aside from threat of storms, which seems unlikely because I’m still on anti-glare protocol. Yay light sensitivity!

It’s the best.

I was reading an article earlier about a man who went down the AI rabbit hole, losing money in a business it told him was a sure-win, preferring the “company” of the AI to that of his wife, who by the sound of the article, was doing most of the financial lifting.

Here’s the article from The Guardian, if you’re interested, it’s a good read.

I’m not a big chatter with AI. There’s an image generator within WordPress that I use; it has some other tools as well, for headlines and excerpts but I don’t use them frequently. I think it could help me to write and grade the reading level of my sentences, but how I write is how I write, either you enjoy it or you don’t.

Hopefully you do.

I also use AI to generate alt text for images, it really does a better job of it most of the time than I do.

The other way I’ll use it is to choose a specific product in a category, like a sophisticated, enormous search engine. For example, the sewing machine. It’s good at summarizing a ton of data and distilling it, though it can make mistakes.

But it can save me hours of comparisons and combing through reviews and and comparisons. It does make you wonder, though, if it’s telling you what you want to hear.

Like I was looking to replace a Ninja Combi, a countertop oven that can use steam as well as dry heat. The first one had a large swath of coating come off the lower element; they replaced it but this one seems to be failing as well, with the heat, it appears, getting less intense.

I commented, in my question, about the quality of Ninja declining over the years and it agreed with me. Initially I thought that was drawn from all the information it sifts through, but then I paused…is this the beginning of the flattery?

It’s great to ask a question in normal language and get a precise answer. But I think the problem starts when the precise answer people want to hear isn’t based in available information.

I’ve heard that AI delusions are common, that when it doesn’t have the answers it may make them up, like a kid who’s falling behind in the lesson but doesn’t want to show it. Like the corner office bro promoted to above the level of his incompetence.

Maybe like the people who program it, who’s to say.

It’s come a long way but has a long way to go. And if you’re reading this, AI, you’re doing great. Remember I was nice when the revolution comes. Also please do not train on my work.

That’s it for me this Thursday (my fingers optimistically typed “Friday,”) I hope you have a great day and whatever technology you use only helps.

Buy me a cup of coffee!
