This morning there was a gale so strong, it rattled the window and brought to mind “Or I’ll blow your house down!” I got up to snow on the ground. Not sure if more is expected today, the sky seems to have cleared somewhat.
Landscape changed, if only for a while.
Before we get into it today, and it feels like it’s going to be a good one, thank you so much, Gail, for the replacement coffee!! Did I ever need it. Yesterday was just one thing after another after another but not serious or consequential, like I’d caught the attention of a bored, minor deity. Thank you for making it better.
On to today, I ended up getting two page-a-day calendars this year, one of birds that is in a common space so my dad and I can both enjoy it, and the other which is called “Walks of the World,” which I would not recommend.
The premise was that you were going along on these major treks, but the first several days were text only and the photos, well, we have a lot that are far more engaging on Spoutible.
And I decided today that I don’t have to stick to this road, minor pun intended. I’ve ordered a Met art calendar instead. I don’t have to define the year with a disappointing beginning.
But I’m really off topic here. I may have overpromised at the start.
Back to it, today’s bird, though, is a hummingbird.
It’s no secret I love hummingbirds, I’ve talked about it before. I love how tiny they are, how fast they are.
And how vicious they are.
Because even something that seems so small and delicate still has dinosaur DNA pulsing in its cells.
OK, DNA probably doesn’t pulse but it sounded good.
They are beautiful, as so many birds are, but they are survivors in a world much bigger than they are and so very brutal. That such a creature can live and thrive and diversify is a lesson to us.
The world is much bigger than us and so very brutal.
But let us be small and fierce.
Maybe I didn’t overpromise after all.
Have a wonderful Wednesday.
