I’m taking a little break from writing for a couple of weeks, but I didn’t want to leave you with nothing to read, so for the next ten posts, I’ll share with you my Top 10 Ponderings of the Universe. Is the order meaningful?
Your guess is as good as mine. Today: What it’s like to be a bird.
I don’t know if you’ve wondered it too, watching them through a window or soaring overhead, flitting from branch to branch. What is it actually like to be the living proof of dinosaurs, to have that coursing through your DNA.
They can also see UV light because they have one more cone in their eyes than we do, and as someone who wears glasses, the idea that some birds of prey can see 2 to 3 miles away is unfathomable.
I’ll watch them, especially, for some reason, seagulls, darting and swooping high in the air, looking at times like they’re catching a wave in the air and imagine what the world would be if the sky wasn’t the limit.
Obviously I’m not the first to ponder this very thought, the tale of Icarus and his ill-fated wings, a story passed down orally long before it was written, has endured possibly for more than 3,500 years.
What a different world they wanted to fly away from then.
Do birds watch us and wonder what our world is like? Do they envy us?
Pity us?
I’ve seen enough birds to suspect the latter.
Have a great Monday.
