A tiny piece. I couldn’t see it, but I could feel it, every time I pressed my foot down. I used a flashlight, but there was nothing but the aftermath of the prick, a tiny dot of blood. I tried a pin, heating it first in the flame of a long reach lighter, and thought I’d definitely gotten it.
I stood up and as soon as I rested my weight again, there it was, needling me.
Finally, I soaked it. Today, I noticed as I was standing it didn’t hurt me anymore. I missed the moment when it went, but now it’s gone.
It’s a relief I didn’t know I had.
