It’s sunny and mild, and I’m actually here ready to write a proper post after yesterday.

Yesterday was not a good day.

As you likely know by now, our upright freezer broke on Tuesday, turning liquifiable contents liquid, robbing us of our little frozen gold mine of stored food. The water dripped on the floor; for a day I kept an old, faded coral towel there in case there was more.

So when Wednesday arrived, I hoped for better, but that was not going to be the case, which is how it goes sometimes. In the morning, I found a little spider in my bathroom, and I carefully covered it with a cup to put it outside the window. I made sure it was still in there, carried it to the living room so, if it escaped, it wouldn’t be in my bedroom, and opened the window.

To a gust of wind

Which not only blew that spider back into the room, but another in as well. We get them here, outside the windows, in the city, city spiders who love heights, as much as I could tell from my old place.

So somewhere, there is not one spider, but two. When I went into the kitchen there was a fruit fly or gnat buzzing around. If they buzz. It probably came in with the gust.

“Fruit fly,” I said, “meet spider.” I actually haven’t seen it since so who knows.

I spent hours on a chat with Costco in the most un-Costco-like experience, where I was told firmly the 90 day window to return an appliance was gone even if it failed in less than a year, and we had to have a tech visit. Over and over I explained how we would never trust it again. Finally I gave a graphic description of the problem, including the leaky contents and how odd it was for Costco to require so many hoops for something that had so catastrophically failed, and because of the damage to the floor, we were escalated to product liability.

I guess I leapfrogged one set of hoops straight into another? I’m not sure, but I do appreciate the supervisor who helped. How it will turn out, I don’t know, but we have to keep the broken freezer while it plays out.

Which is not ideal.

I kind of don’t have proteins to cook at the moment.

After that, which was exhausting, I had ordered some frozen veggies I could squeeze into the fridge freezer by getting rid of other food in there, and to make it a little better, some fresh halibut that was on sale. For dinner? Seared halibut and baked potatoes.

Only.

All the potatoes had sprouted. Fine fine, pivoted to rice. Took out the fish.

YIKES.

It did not smell good.

At that point the rice was done so we had seared tofu instead, which was actually pretty great but I only have one more block.

Sigh.

So it was, indeed, one of those days. Today I am looking at the puffy clouds in the sky, at the breeze in the trees and hoping yesterday was yesterday.

So here’s to a fresh Thursday, or mostly fresh, it’s getting to late morning.

Have a great day.
