It’s one of those days with a heavy, gray sky, and they’re saying it’s going to storm.
I kind of hope it will.
I glimpsed the spider this morning, crawling across the rail at the back of the folding desk I use in the TV room, skating around to the bottom, but by the time I came back with a cup and grabbed a piece of paper from the printer, it had vanished.
It could be anywhere.
Maybe I should call it Phoebe. If you watch Bob’s Burgers, you know. If you don’t, here’s a little snippet:
Anyway, not my own choice of pet but we are where we are. And I only saw that fruit fly/gnat once so I guess the they did make one another’s acquaintance.
This past weekend I went with a friend to see Theater of the Mind at an offshoot of the Goodman Theater. It was created by Talking Heads and big suit wearer David Byrne and his wife since 2025, writer Mala Gaonkar, who, it turns out, is also an investment banker or something equally as shockingly lucrative.
She may be very excellent at that other job but I’ve got to be honest, my friends.
Our minds were not blown.
The show runs every 15 minutes for 75 minutes with an audience limited to 16. You get a guide, whose name is David, and when you leave, you see the whole cast of Davids, one after another after another, in pictures along a wall. David is played by actors of all genders, all races, and it does make you wonder if the experience changes with the David. Maybe, maybe not.
I will say this: the cast–David, and our aid through the experience, Jo–were absolutely fabulous. It actually amounted to a one-person show dependent on audience participation, as Jo’s role seemed more administrative.
Our audience was not participatory.
I don’t want to write spoilers, because I think the whole point is not to know, but we were led through various rooms, each containing a “challenge” to the senses. The only thing is these were not new “challenges.”
And the story itself was not compelling, I’m sorry to say, and I say that as someone who does not have a show staged by the Goodman at any location. But I’m also not married to David Byrne or a hedge funder so there’s that.
I went into it thinking that it would be weirder than Iceboy! It was not.
Iceboy! still wins.
But my friend and I had a marvelous time regardless, and I got to give her some things I made her, including a tote bag and a bag with an octopus cutout with a secret fun lining. She doesn’t live in the city and we don’t see each other often.
And I got to take her to Sugar Daddy bakery, which has baked goods that taste even better than they look which is rare. So that was a win.
I guess sometimes our expectations can be too high. But maybe that’s the fun of the journey.
Anyway, that’s it for me on this gloomy day. A bit of a long one, I hope you don’t mind. Have a great day.
