It’s sunny, starting to look end-of-summery and I’m hoping you enjoyed the Ponderings series, because I definitely enjoyed writing it.
Who knows, I might do something like that again in the future.
If you are a regular here, you may recall I got the travel bug somewhere in the middle of July. I thought it would be in vain but it turns out my dad also wanted a change of scenery, so I wasn’t only taking a break.
We were on a road trip!
From here to Jamestown, New York so I could visit the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum; through the Berkshires where the motel wasn’t exactly what we were expecting, given that we thought it was a hotel, but at least they gave us rooms next to each other; and onward to Maine, first Portland and then Camden, where we had a lovely time, minus a puffin and whale tour where we saw three puffins and reluctant slivers of two whales, barely rising and then retreating.
Probably more on that later on.
After Maine we went to Connecticut to the Dinosaur State Park where the dinosaur tracks were impressive but very poorly presented, and the lizards all looked depressed. We stayed at the worst Hampton Inn I’ve ever experienced, check in took us about 40 minutes and two people, as they didn’t have our rooms even close to the same zip code and they had remodeling going on that hadn’t been disclosed which they claimed they “just” learned about, but we had an outstanding meal at Butchers and Bakers to sooth the irritation.
We drove from there to Erie, Pennsylvania and enjoyed some lake views before driving home to our own lake. We were 30 minutes from home when a pickup that was about to miss its exit tried to occupy the same space as the car I was driving, and it didn’t care, it was going to go.
Moments before I’d noticed a sign that said “Stay alert, don’t get hurt,” which I was still entertained by when this happened. I managed to brake in time. Luckily for all involved, so did the car behind me as we came to a complete stop on a highway/highway exit. The car behind laid on the horn, and I pointed to the car ahead, as I was taking no responsibility.
We were fine, but that moment still haunts me. As I said to my dad at the time, I stayed alert and we did not get hurt.
It was a fantastic break, though, and I am teeming with thoughts and ideas and things to say, so it was restorative as well. I really took to the unstructured nature of a road trip, the control over when and where.
And so here we are, once again, back, ready. It’s such a huge country we live in.
And we’ll probably come back to that too.
That’s it for me on this Monday, though. I hope you have a fantastic start to your week.
