It’s hot, heat warning hot, but I’m ok with air conditioning, lucky me. For people who aren’t, who are in the city, there are cooling centers. If you are also in the heatwave elsewhere and don’t have air conditioning, please check for cooling centers near you.
And if you do have air conditioning, run it.
Today we got another vomitous spew from the Supreme Court, and upholding birthright citizenship is nothing to celebrate, really. The fact that the right wing kangaroo justices entertained, at all, the audacity of a man who figured he could amend the Constitution with a scrawl of his Sharpie is absolutely galling.
And three of them thought he should be able to do it.
But that was the easy cookie, the moldy, FDA-ignored placating treat so that people wouldn’t talk about the other things they did: make it easier to put more money in the pockets of politicians, a nice companion piece to the earlier case in which they opined, to effect if not literally, that a bribe is just a thank you in advance.
They also decided that groups could ban trans women from competing in sports. Did they ban trans men too? I don’t know. I don’t need to read the case because these cases are made of whims, bigotry, and smugness, not jurisprudence.
And maybe some of those advance thank yous, who knows.
It doesn’t even matter what the majority says from one case to the next, the outcomes match what they want. There’s no legal basis, there’s certainly no constitutional basis, there’s no logical basis. They are a motley crew of errand boys with the egos of emperors.
Apparently there was a leak that alito was retiring, which was immediately retracted. It’s funny that the most loyal, the most devoted, the most errand-boy-y of the bunch is the one being singled out to go away.
Oh how the loyalty is rewarded.
It is too ridiculous to emotionally invest in any of it. Either we will fix it or we won’t; but like so many civilizations before it, the United States is fading beneath the roaring waves of greed, lust for power, and terrible, terrible people.
There are so many ways it could have been other than this one, but here we are.
Sorry to end on that note, sorry to take the joy out of the one ok result, but there’s no more room for cushioning. We are where we’d feared we’d be.
In any case, I hope you have as good a Tuesday as you can, focus locally, do something kind for yourself, advocate for something one way or another. We can paddle even as the boat sinks.
Have an productive day.
