It’s summery, it’s sunny, I have a nice cup of coffee and this morning the Angels of Abt arrived, whisking away the not-even-a-year-old fast-fashion freezer from Costco twice deemed non-repairable but somehow not refundable (well, maybe they didn’t whisk), and placing a gleaming new one in its place.
Mostly gleaming. We’ll get to that.
These were two very sturdy men, and they needed a strap between them to transport the cursed thing to the hall. But sure, my father and I could have taken it back to the Costco Warehouse.
No problem.
The reason I said “mostly gleaming” is that there was a little bit of a scrape at the top. Tiny. Barely visible. The one guy immediately offered us 10% off or a new door. Right there. On the spot.
And that’s why we should have gone with Abt in the first place.
I’m not really a “learn it the hard way,” kind of person. I tend to be cautious, overly cautious at times, but that it was Costco made me let down my guard and trust my previous experience instead of reviews.
Now I have that experience. I didn’t like getting it.
This an interesting position for someone who likes to avoid all the trouble, and maybe it emphasizes my skepticism in a good way.
Maybe it reinforces it in a bad one.
I will tell you this, though. We didn’t fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. We didn’t let those shiny return authorizations keep us hooked, leaving us storing a freezer that wasn’t working for months on end as they kept bleating “inspection!!” without scheduling one, providing contacts for one, or having one contact us.
Sometimes you lose money, and you can watch it, retreating with the tide, close enough to touch.
That, I suppose, is life.
Sometimes the people raking it in are also standing and pointing at you, laughing, lining their pockets with soggy cash.
That, I suppose, is also life. And this culture of endless greed in which we find ourselves.
But it is time to put this freezer chapter on ice, and that money can float off into the sunset.
I’m not entirely proud of that freezer/ice thing. Maybe I need more coffee?
Either way, have an awesome Thursday, I know mine is filled with relief.
