I’m taking a little break from writing for a couple of weeks, but I didn’t want to leave you with nothing to read, so for ten posts, I’ll share with you my Top 10 Ponderings of the Universe. Is the order meaningful?
Your guess is as good as mine. Today: Or we were.
There are estimates, over the course of time, about how many species of humans there have been, how many coexisted, how many still live on in our genes, and I couldn’t find a quick consensus for how many. I’ve seen 21 as the number from Smithsonian referred to here; Google says it goes up to 30 and I can’t find a reference for that, but this isn’t going to be scientific.
Maybe six lived at the same time; maybe 4; who really knows and that’s not really the point. I just wonder what that was like.
How did it go? Did our species kill off the ones it didn’t mate with? Did our species kill off the ones it did?
That seems like something our species would do.
What did they look like, these other humans? What were their rituals? What were their thoughts? How did they live?
And why are they gone?
It’s so strange, the thought of them. Like an only child who might have had siblings, if things had gone a little differently. They were here.
And now they are gone, only fossils to tell us they existed at all.
What an existence we have, built on a past we’ll never know.
And with that, I’ll call it a Thursday. I hope you have a marvelous day.
