A Bit to Read

My posts specifically about writing have dwindled recently, but I used a technique yesterday when stuck that was so effective, I had to share it with you.

It’s called a “List of Ten.”

It’s not my own technique; I picked it up at the writing program at the Second City Training Center, and though it was taught to us for use in writing comedy sketches, it can get you past a hump no matter the genre.

That was a very long sentence. On we go.

It’s simple. You generate a list of ten possibilities. You can use it to create possible topics; characters; plot points; situations; whatever you need. In my case, I didn’t know what happened next. I’d started with something and it just felt wrong.

So I did my list of ten and it helped me to get to the right next point. Make sure you do at least ten, as my writing instructor said, as usually your best ideas come near the bottom when you really allow yourself some wider thought.

And that’s it!
