It was a rainy night and it’s a rainy morning, and my head was OK but now it isn’t, which makes me think there are more storms to come.

Isn’t that just life.

Today I was thinking about how, when you work out regularly, you may also work in “recovery days,” days when you are still active, but at a far lower intensity; or maybe even not active at all.

I’m sure there are people who will want to be specific on this. Normally I’d google for the technicalities but this is a metaphor and I’m not really sure about how accurate we have to be for metaphors.

But I digress.

This morning I found my body needed a rest, so I treated it as a recovery day, largely stretching to try to ease out the rough spots. When I finished, though, I realized it wasn’t only my body.

I need a mental recovery day too.

It’s been a long stretch fully packed with all kinds of adulting and Big Thoughts and problems to be solved. My brain needs some coddling too.

I guess, when you get down to it, a “mental health day” is a recovery day for your mind.

Sometimes all it needs are gentle stretches and a day without adulting and Big Thoughts and problems to be solved.

It’s easy to think that this morning though, with the rain falling in in a mist so fine I can barely see it, from a sky that looks like a sheet of paper with a light behind it. On a day where the traffic is sloshing quietly to itself, where the urgency of everything right now, RIGHT NOW, seems to have faded into a rain-slicked background.

It is a world going on with its business, and by world I mean the world itself, and not us pesky parasites on it. It doesn’t mind the buildings or the flowers on the trees, it is as it was and it will always be.

And those are the kinds of languid thoughts drifting through my tired head, as I sit and type, allowing myself a recovery day.

I hope you have an opportunity for one too. Have a great Wednesday.
