It’s cloudy today, I think we’re done with the rain, at least for now, and it’s cooler. At least it didn’t rain on us with our marathon drive yesterday.
So that was good.
Yesterday was the dentist, and because the office is so great and my dentist and hygienist so fantastic, I barely had any lead-up stress. Who knew that was possible. But they are in a (to me) far-flung suburb. And because for those of us who live an urban existence, all far-flung suburbs in the same general direction must be “close enough” I suggested we complete another errand that turned out to be…more than half an hour away.
Ahh, city folk.
By the time we were done, the drive back to the city was at 1:48, about the running time of one of those bad Friday movies, so we had some dinner and finally headed home when it was a little over an hour. I think we drove over 150 miles?
Fun!
My hygienist told me that she’d never been a reader before, but she wanted to become one. She had no idea even what genre she liked; even when it comes to TV, she hadn’t really thought about it. She only wanted to enjoy it.
I like that, in this tough era, we’re all turning to offline hobbies to cope. I suggested she try Nora Roberts to get the ball rolling, she’s the best selling author in the world for a reason, and then told her to talk to the fiction librarian at her local library.
The library hadn’t occurred to her, which is not surprising in this age of devaluing public libraries, few sources really tout what they provide. And same goes for librarians. All of my librarians throughout school produced books, like magic, which broadened my world and gave me insight into people who weren’t like me.
So I keep thinking about that lucky librarian who will get this awesome woman with a mind ready to explore, and be able to help her discover new universes.
What do you think, librarians?
I looked up what I think will be her local main library, and they even have maker sessions for adults to learn new crafts. I mean that’s so cool. In an age where we’re looking for community, maybe it’s time to look at the classics.
Anyway, that’s it for me on this Wednesday. I hope you have an awesome, awesome day.
