It’s raining today, a heavy, constant drizzle of drops big enough to see. At some point the rain is supposed to become thunderstorms, but I don’t mind it.
Not from the inside.
Yesterday was more of a running around day. Today I have a long list closer to home. Well as close as one can get.
You get the idea.
Last night I went to an event featuring Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times, Jill Wine-Banks, (the most hyphens I’ve typed outside of my own name!) and a woman named Renee Silverman, who runs an org called Luggage for Freedom.
I was so taken with the idea, I wanted to talk about it here. They take gently used luggage and pack it with essentials for women leaving violent situations; additionally, they provide backpacks for their children, also filled with essentials and comfort items.
In this era where big change, systemic change, institutional change is being torn to shreds by the hurricane of republican politics, these personal acts can genuinely form our building blocks to start again.
Otherwise I wouldn’t call the tone uplifting. There was a pragmatic air to what the speakers offered, and while not exactly, resigned, I would say I saw much of the feeling we talk about here regularly.
Intelligent people grounded in the world see the world for what it is.
Overall the event was absolutely gorgeous, and it was the first time I’ve been to such a thing where the food wasn’t merely edible but genuinely fantastic. I just wish there was a secret formula they had, waiting for us, as we ate our cheesecake.
Maybe we’ll discover it in November, but that one is no secret.
Anyway, that’s it for me on this gray day, I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday.
