I’m taking a little break from writing for a couple of weeks, but I didn’t want to leave you with nothing to read, so for ten posts, I’ll share with you my Top 10 Ponderings of the Universe. Is the order meaningful?
Your guess is as good as mine. Today: Traversing time.
If you’ve read me before this post, you probably are already well-acquainted with my fascination with time. How it moves, how it could be nothing more than an illusion, how it could be woven into the very fabric of the universe itself.
It’s a slippery concept.
But probably nothing grips my attention more than the idea of time travel. The People Who Know About These Things go back and forth about the feasibility of it, and whether you could go backward or only forward, if it was possible, but why limit our thoughts to what we know is possible right now?
A lot of things possible today were science fiction less than a decade ago. And pure hallucination a hundred years ago.
I’ve always thought of myself as a future person, that without hesitation, given the option, I’d go forward in time. So much of the past is filled with such horrors, I guess I have a core optimism that the future would be better.
That’s not exactly being borne out right now, I can admit that freely.
But still there is that nagging hope that if you could go backward, you could change things, so many things, large and small, global and personal. You could see the dinosaurs stomping the earth and find out how close the guesses are; maybe be an unexpected and vanishing voice at the back of the room when a document establishing freedom somehow also enshrined enslavement.
Would this world be a changed one?
Who’s to say.
