The sky is overcast and clear in wide swaths, and there is definitely an air of fall creeping in. Leaves are losing their deep green luster.
The weather has turned.
Before we get to wherever we may go today, thank you so much, Deb, for the coffees! Is there anything better when you get that crisp edge to the air than a lovely mug with the steam wafting from it? Of course not! Thank you so much for cozying up my very early autumn!
And now Wednesday.
You might notice that I’m behind today, and part of that was because I wanted to take a walk by the lake, in the wind, with the birds gliding across it as though they were surfing. It was glorious.
The waves were wild, and if you didn’t know it was a lake you would think it was an ocean with them crashing against the concrete breakwater. I’m glad I went, though it felt colder on the way back than going.
I wanted to be somewhat grounded in here and now, because as you may know I’ve been rewatching New Girl and last night I got to the episode where Jess and Cece are campaigning for former Secretary of State Clinton. And Schmidt makes a bet with Jess that if she can’t get people to register she has to write in Winston, and at that point I had to skip the episode.
It was too much to take.
How many people wrote in “joke” candidates? How many people treated it like it was silly to care, silly to worry, silly to think a woman could or should win?
It made me melancholy but in an kind of time travel way. That show was so much “before.”
Even their indecipherable drinking game, “True American” would have no place in this wrong-turn version of America.
And I shudder to think the ways those characters would have gone.
So today I went and watched the water, to keep myself here in what is rather than adrift in what could have been.
It’s the only real option.
