Great is one of those words that depends so much on tone. How are you feeling this Monday morning?

Great!

Or

I still have to empty the dishwasher.

Great.

See what I mean? Genuine, sarcastic, “great” has it all.

Maybe, ironically, because it doesn’t say much. What is “great?” Not a word you’d use while writing, really, unless it’s something a character would say. Then, of course, it’s great.

Because of the duality.

Not many words have that instant flexibility, that built-in self contradiction.

Meanwhile I have much Monday to Monday, shoulder to the wheel and all those cliches.

No need to worry about me, though. I’m great.

  1. Dude. I’ve always thought of Dude that way. Dude! or …dude… or even Du-hu-hude! So many interpretations. Enjoy your week!

  3. Oh my yes, tone of voice – that nuance writers have to find a way to get across to our readers. I have to admit being a user of the sarcastic version of this word rather more than the positive. I may have to give that some work …
