#TuesdayThoughts: Buy my books.

Standard

I don’t have much to say today given all that’s going on, so instead, check out my books. Buy them.

Even read them!

You know you want to. Maybe sorta.

#MondayThoughts: Yep

Standard

Back again to Monday, after a weekend learning the utterly incredible credible news that our alleged “president” rewarded a hostile foreign power for killing our own soldiers.

I’m sure Republicans will be fine with that, they’ve been fine with everything so far. How we got here is difficult to see, but I don’t like it.

And still we go on, like nothing has changed and yet everything has changed. What a surreal experience.

It’s a hazy day, like it’s a hazy world, and though it’s quiet, it’s not restful.

I’ve been slogging away on a project as resilient as this pretzel dough I once made, every time I tried to roll it into a rope it snapped back. Eventually I gave up and made rolls.

I’m trying to make word rolls.

Anyway, I’m off to further caffeinate. Have as good a Monday as the times allow.

#FridayThoughts: Whistling in the Dark

Standard

It’s a rainy day with a golden light at the horizon, and you know I love to write on a rainy day. Though no fiction for me today.

Nope, deep, serious thoughts about deep, serious things. Fueled by coffee with my Chobani creamer, which is utterly yummy.

Yesterday was groceries, so many groceries, a heavy cart filled for me and my parents. Everything is more expensive. Absolutely everything.

To be honest, we’re all just kind of whistling in the dark, a very odd phrase you know I’m going to look up for the origins. Hmm, no real answer on the origins, but a lot of sites have the meaning of the phrase wrong, saying it means being sure of something you’re wrong about.

Ironic, no?

Whistling in the dark is pretending to be brave when you’re not; pretending to be optimistic when it doesn’t look good.

It’s also a song by They Might Be Giants. From the song:

A woman came up to me and said
“I’d like to poison your mind
With wrong ideas that appeal to you
Though I am not unkind”

That feels painfully appropriate, I’d say. Anyway, as the gold in the sky fades to rain, I’m going to get some stuff done. Have a good Friday and a good weekend, and if you’re going to whistle, make it a good tune.

#ThursdayThoughts Ten Word Photo Prompt: Compromise

Standard
Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

It’s ten word story time! Actually it’s long after normal ten word story time, but I had Things to Do.

Better late, right?

Anyway, using the image above as a prompt, write a ten word story. Exactly ten words.

Ready?

Here’s mine:

Fine. She’d wait all day. She was getting the remote.

#WednesdayWisdom: Shrug

Standard

At this highly charged time, where around every corner lies a literal life-or-death crisis, where the serious means serious, sometimes you just have to shrug. Not at the big stuff.

At the small stuff.

There are people puzzles you will never solve, fits of temper you will never understand, absolute stances you will never get.

Just shrug.

We cannot solve it all; we can’t even process it all. The little things of life will come at us, detritus coursing down an increasingly-raging river. Let those things go whizzing right on by.

And if they hit you with the force of the current, shrug.

It happens sometimes.

I don’t have the bandwidth for games or pedantry right now. Some things are far more serious than others. So that is my Wednesday Wisdom, from me to you.

Shrug.

#TuesdayThoughts: Onward onward

Standard

It’s Tuesday, in case you hadn’t noticed or lost track, and I am not full of ideas. That does happen. Lately, more often than not.

I had a spider on the handle of my window this morning, it was clearly trying to find its way back out, and I obliged it, trapping it in a little cup, and then putting it in the widow frame. And like it knew what was happening, it walked to freedom.

There are a ton of people outside on this sunny day with fluffy bursts of clouds, the sky at least a dozen shades of blue. You’d think it was a normal day in early summer, not the middle of a pandemic, not life under a fascist.

Humans are adapatable.

Or maybe really really adept at denial. I largely think it’s the second one.

I didn’t finish my coffee this morning, I probably should have, alas. I could always heat it. Or pretend it’s iced and it’s supposed to be cold.

Eh.

Anyway, I’m off into the great yonder of Tuesday. Have a great day, as long as it’s grounded in reality.

#MondayThoughts: Already Frustrated

Standard

Sometimes you have to wonder if people are genuinely wanting to solve problems, or if they just want to stir up the mud.

There are far more mud stirrers than you would think. Or at least than I would think. Sometimes I hate this place.

This place being Earth.

It’s a rough way to start out a week, angry and annoyed, but that’s pretty much the base emotion these days, everything piles on top of angry and annoyed.

At least they are emotions that can be channeled for writing.

Speaking of writing, I don’t think I’ve mentioned my writing for Rantt Media on my blog. It’s political, some of it nuts-and-bolts, some of it more toward analysis.

Here are my articles, if you’re interested, and I’ll be adding a link in the sidebar. I suppose I could have done that with more fanfare.

Hmm.

It’s the annoyedness again.

Anyway, I’m off to do…stuff. Have a great, productive Monday in which you manage to channel your frustration.

#FridayThoughts: Oh right. My blog.

Standard

I complete forgot about blogging today. I mean COMPLETELY. Just floated right out of my head like I don’t do it five days a week.

I’m tired, I guess.

Today I’m giving away my previous mixer, Stella, because she has been replaced with a fancy blue KitchenAid. That’s right.

I’ve got the gold standard of mixers, except not in gold, though that’s an option.

And yet I’m sad to see Stella go, but hopefully she will find a new home with someone who will use her to make all kinds of lovely things. It’s not like I need two stand mixers.

I don’t need two stand mixers, do I?

So off she goes, with a note attached introducing herself, to Goodwill, where hopefully she’ll find a perfect new home.

And that’s all I have for this sunny Friday in June, with a Happy Juneteenth and a moment to remember all the people brutalized and killed by the horrific institution of slavery. A better tomorrow without forgetting the past.

Have a good weekend.

#ThursdayThoughts Ten Word Photo Prompt: Time

Standard
Photo by Oladimeji Ajegbile on Pexels.com

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for a ten word story! Using the photo above as a writing prompt, write a story of exactly ten words.

Exactly.

Sounds pretty easy right? Well, it isn’t!

Ready? Here’s mine:

Fighting Watson’s will, the second hand twitched. Then it reversed.

#WednesdayWisdom: Little bits

Standard

I’ll admit it. I’m overwhelmed.

I’m overwhelmed by the naked cruelty we see daily. I’m overwhelmed by a pandemic our government refuses to rein in. I’m overwhelmed by armed conflict escalating around the world.

It’s a lot.

So here is my wisdom for today, take it or leave it. It’s OK to feel overwhelmed.

That’s it.

I can’t offer solutions because there are no solutions. The world as it is right now is overwhelming. There are very evil people with a whole lot of power.

But, like Kimmy Schmidt, we can take it ten seconds at a time. Just ten seconds. That’s all we need to do.

That’s me for Wednesday. Take care of yourself, and remember, just ten seconds.
